Challenges and Opportunities in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A)

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) are significant corporate events and are quite common among firms in developed economies. Quite often, merging firms misjudge the extent of M&A benefits and end up with failed deals. Success rate of M&A deals is less than 50%!

Past studies have shown that M&A deals fail for a number of reasons, such as, overestimation of synergy level, challenges with process, product and employee integration, overpayment of target organization, or CEO overconfidence.

Managers and shareholders should pay close attention to all the factors that are critical for M&A success. Many companies engage in M&A activities without proper due-diligence.

A balanced approach should be taken when initiating an M&A deal. In other words, it is important for us to recognize both opportunities and challenges associated with M&A deals. Unwarranted excitement on M&As – without recognizing the risks associated with such activities – might be very damaging for the merging firms and could destroy shareholders wealth quite significantly.

This conference will explore challenges and opportunities in mergers and acquisitions.
