Health Systems Research Seminar: The Role of Analytics in Improving the Efficiency of Cancer Treatment Facilities

The main cancer treatment modalities are surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The complexity of logistics processes surrounding the preparation of schedules for staff who work in cancer treatment centers is the fact that they involve extremely costly resources, sometimes synchronously. In addition, they are subject to several due dates (i.e., appointments already scheduled, maximum waiting time) and several hazards (i.e., variable preparation time for each patient) and should handle unexpected events like the arrival of patients requiring urgent palliative care. The flow of operations should be controlled to ensure that treatments are prepared in time for their delivery. We will discuss several problems which can lead to improving trough put of patients, such as scheduling appointments and medical personnel, and designing treatment that can be delivered efficiently, which was conducted with our partner the Centre Intérgé de Cancérologie de Laval (CICL). We will cover the use of simulation, online stochastic optimization with Benders decomposition and column generation.

About the Speaker

Louis-Martin Rousseau is a full professor of Operations Research in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Professor Rousseau was one of the first to pursue research in the field of methods hybridization of classical operational research techniques (OR) and Constraint Programming (CP), which comes from Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Since February 2016 he holds the Canada Research Chair in Healthcare Analytics and Logistics (HANALOG.ca), which studies complex and/or interconnected logistics problems in the field home care services, cancer treatment, and operating room management.  Louis-Martin was also the founder and Chief Science Officer of Planora for 10 years that, before its acquisition by JDA in 2012, propose a scheduling SaaS solution to the health sector. He is also a fellow Element-AI, which aims to bring artificial intelligence solutions to a broad scope of organizations.
