Telecommuting is becoming increasingly prevalence in the workplace. However, as reflected in recent trends, such as Marissa Mayer revoking all telecommuting privileges at Yahoo, there is a great deal of misunderstanding about the efficacy of telecommuting both for work-life balance and productivity purposes. This talk provides an overview of academic research on telecommuting as well as best practice recommendations for those implementing and managing telecommuting programs.

À propos de la conférencière (en anglais seulement)

Kristen M. Shockley received her Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of South Florida in 2010. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia. Her main area of research focuses on understanding the intersection of employees’ work and family lives. Specifically, she has conducted research aimed at understanding organizational initiatives to help employees managing competing life demands (i.e., flexible work arrangements); research that explores the relationship between work-family conflict and health outcomes, including eating behaviors and physiological indicators of health; research that addresses the theoretical foundations of work-family interactions; and research targeted at understanding how dual-earner couples balance work and family roles. Her research has been published in several books and journals, such as Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and the Journal of Vocational Behavior. She has been recognized for her scholarly work through several awards, including the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) Mary L. Tenopyr and S. Rains Wallace awards, Journal of Business and Psychology Reviewer of the Year award, Personnel Psychology article of the year award, and as a finalist for the Rosabeth Moss Kanter award for excellence in work-family research. She currently serves as an Associate Editor at Journal of Vocational Behavior as well as on the editorial board of several journals. She previously served as the program chair for the SIOP annual conference. She teaches courses in statistics, work and family, introduction to psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and motivation.
