Jenna Evans, Ph.D.
Staff Scientist, Enhanced Program Evaluation Unit, Cancer Care Ontario

There is an increasing interest in not just measuring health system performance, but also actively ‘managing’ it by providing feedback, establishing accountability for results, and applying incentives. Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) manages the performance of 13 Regional Cancer Programs and 26 Regional Renal Programs in the province. The aims of this study were to assess CCO’s approach to performance management from multiple stakeholder perspectives, and to prioritize future research directions.

We conducted a literature review of health system performance management to characterize the state of the field and identify areas ripe for research. We then interviewed 156 of CCO’s stakeholders, including administrators, clinicians, and patients, to identify strengths and weaknesses of CCO’s performance management system, and to assess and rank five directions for future research. In this talk, I will share the results of this exploratory work and discuss the implications for policy-makers and leaders at CCO and beyond.
